The following is a guest blog from Richard Reed, senior vice president, Disaster Cycle Services at the American Red Cross
The holiday season is a time of celebration and reflection, but most importantly, a time to give thanks and to give back.
For the American Red Cross, it’s one of our busiest times because of the increase in home fires. Every day our volunteers are on the ground helping victims of kitchen fires caused by holiday cooking accidents, fires caused by alternative heating options and other disasters.[jetpack_subscription_form title="Subscribe to Out of Office:" subscribe_button="Sign Me Up"]
On average, the Red Cross responds to 60,000 home fires a year. Tragically, seven times a day someone in the U.S. dies in a home fire and 36 times per day someone is injured, according to the National Fire Protection, 2013. Smoke alarms cut the risk of death from a fire in half.
Thanks to FedEx and other community partners, we can go door-to-door to distribute, install and test smoke alarms in neighborhoods across the country for free.
The Red Cross relies on contributions and corporate supporters like FedEx to help when and where it’s needed. This holiday season, we are encouraging consumers to Pack, Ship and Give.
What is Pack, Ship and Give? Through December 14, FedEx will donate $1 to the American Red Cross for every pack and ship transaction at any one of the more than 1,800 FedEx Office locations nationwide, up to $250,000. Donations like this from FedEx enable the Red Cross to provide critical recovery services to people impacted by home fires, and will also provide communities the lifesaving tools and information to support home fire prevention efforts.
The Red Cross and FedEx have a long history of service. As a founding member of our Annual Disaster Giving Program, FedEx has provided millions of dollars in donations and in-kind services to ensure the Red Cross and our volunteers are ready to respond at a moment’s notice to nearly 70,000 disasters a year.
In addition, the Red Cross has relied on the company’s expertise in moving large numbers of packages swiftly when we need to ship critical equipment to disaster sites in a matter of hours.
The FedEx Pack, Ship and Give program is yet another way the company is demonstrating its commitment to the Red Cross mission, as well as a unique way to provide customers the ease of giving back while they pack and ship.
Help support the Red Cross when you visit your local FedEx Office this holiday season, and Pack, Ship and Give to assist home fire survivors in communities nationwide.
