Finding Inspiration in Color

FedEx OfficeFedEx Office

Some individuals have dreamed of designing their own living space to their liking, others have turned that creative flare into a thriving interior design career.

Faye Smith has been a Dallas based interior designer since 2006. Her company Faye Smith Interior Design has been designing living spaces for residential and commercial customers for over 15 years with no intentions of stopping anytime soon. Faye utilizes FedEx Office for spiral bound and color photo presentation notebooks for her clients, working closely with the team members to ensure the margins and layouts of the presentation books are what she considers perfect.

We all have that one favorite color we prefer, and to make sure her customer’s special request come out to their liking, Faye asks a variety of questions along the lines of “what is your favorite color?” and/or “what color should I definitely stay away from?” She says, “Pushing a color on a client that they don’t like can end a professional relationship.”

“Color trends come and go” says Faye, sometimes designs and colors requested are out of style and “it is my job to inform clients of current trends”.  One current trend is Pantone Color of the Year 2019, PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral.

When printing colors, it is important that the colors match the correct base shade. “A misrepresentation of color can be dissonant…close to matching but still off,” says Faye. The way she communicates the color shades to her clients can be a vital step in the decision progress for her customers. Faye states that strong colors can give a confident feeling and self-awareness to her clients.

Although Faye builds her client’s inspirations from scratch through a variety of questions and colors, she finds her own through current trends listed in magazines and home furniture fabric and through announcements like Pantone Color of the Year.

During her first year of owning a small business, Faye willingly assisted another interior designer for free to learn the ins and outs of client needs. Faye humbled herself to grow as a person and learn from others work.

Below are five tips Faye Smith encourages small business owners like herself to consider.

  1. Learn how to use spreadsheets to track your sales and all details.
  2. Find local resources for supplies and manpower.
  3. Do your homework to find ways to save on shipping.
  4. Care about your clients and remember the details of their personal lives.
  5. Make your job fun. Laugh a lot.
