Sometimes spring cleaning and decluttering our homes can get overwhelming though, can’t it? I’ve heard from so many friends that they struggle with many things such as where to begin, what to focus on and how to get rid of all of the items they no longer need. We’ve got you covered today with tips for removing items and a free spring cleaning and decluttering checklist which will help you focus on smaller projects in each room of your home this year.
We have taken a completely new approach to decluttering our home this year and it may seem a bit harsh to anyone new to this. We’ve removed anything and everything we don’t need or love. It’s been incredibly freeing and it makes for so much less clean-up. With that said, even a small amount of decluttering can go a long way and you can sell or donate your items. But how?
Spring decluttering: Five ways to remove unwanted or unneeded items from your home
- Donate to a local shelter or nonprofit such as Goodwill.
- Donate home items to Habitat for Humanity Restore
- Have a garage sale and price everything low.
- Sell on garage sale sites or resale sites such as Craigslist.

To get started, why not declutter your home. You can do this in baby steps such as doing one drawer a day or can tackle it quickly by doing one room a day. A few tips for decluttering your home
- Make a list of all of the spaces. Don’t skip anything, no matter how small. Then you can tackle a space when you have a spare 15 minutes on a Sunday afternoon by simply looking at your list and starting.
- Start and finish one space before moving on.
- Don’t forget about closets, drawers and cabinets.
- Get rid of doubles, triples etc… Do you really need three beverage dispensers? Or 20 mugs?
- Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t used something in the past year, you probably never will. If you REALLY need something, you can always rent or borrow it from a neighbor or friend.
- Don’t keep things you don’t love UNLESS it falls in the need category. Sometimes we need things even though we don’t love them. For example, our vegetable peeler is not amazing, but at this point, I need to keep it because it’s the only one we have and we eat vegetables every single day.
- Go through sentimental items and spaces last. They can really hold you up and it will be easier to handle those ones after you’ve seen all of your amazing progress in other spaces.
- Group items by where you plan to send them. Trash. Donate. Sell.
- Just start. Don’t expect decluttering and organizing to be perfect. Start somewhere and then finish that spot. I’ve found that after decluttering, I often go back and reorganize spaces to keep like items together.
